Our Story

History

Blair Brothers Angus Ranch started when Ed and Rich Blair began managing their family’s ranch after their father Veldon. In 1989, the difficulty in finding locally sourced bulls with the genetic traits the brothers were selecting for inspired them to incorporate artificial insemination (AI). They knew what they wanted: calving ease traits to efficiently calve more heifers and cattle that would excel in the feedlot.

When neighbors and friends noticed the kind of cattle the Blair brothers were producing, they began asking Ed and Rich to hold bull calves back to purchase. In 1993, Blair Brothers officially began selling bulls.

Every year, our calf crop increases with the growing demand for high quality bulls that perform. Currently, we sell more than 400 bulls a year to breeders across the United States.

In 1998, we saw an opportunity to become founding members of U.S. Premium Beef. This company presents its members with a carcass grid and then pays producers a premium for high quality grading cattle. U.S. Premium Beef brought to the forefront the types of carcasses a producer could receive a premium for from the packing plant. Because of this, we proactively incorporated high-quality carcass traits into our breeding objectives.

Throughout the last few decades, we have evolved to produce bulls that have it all. Calving ease is still a priority, as well as maintaining increased feedlot and carcass performance.

We strive to produce functional females that work for all kinds of producers and environments. Every bull for sale in our lot is a direct product of AI through both its sire and dam. Because of this, the majority of our bulls are stacked five generations deep in proven AI pedigrees. We precisely built a cow herd that allows us to offer bulls in volume and are guaranteed to be the most reliable source of predictable genetics for our customers.

Philosophy

At Blair Brothers Angus Ranch, we believe you can have it all when it comes to your cow herd. That’s why we produce cattle that excel in the pasture, feedlot, and on the dinner plate.

We successfully built a cow herd that combines calving ease, maternal characteristics, adequate growth, moderate frame, feed efficiency, and the ability to marble extremely well.

Our goal is to produce females that work for your operation and you are proud of incorporating into your herd. We believe you should not have to worry about dystocia, bad udders, and watching your back when you are dealing with a new calf. Our cows must to be able to calve on their own then get their calves up and going in a timely manner.

We select and use AI sires based on their proven EPDs and DNA profiles in the Angus breed. This is how we are able to produce the top genetics and power in our calves, while still maintaining structural soundness.

We position ourselves to produce the best beef to supply today’s cattle industry. Carcass traits are important to the consumer and are the few traits the producer actually gets paid for that do not cost him on the ranch.

But don’t just take our word for it. When marketed on a grid, our fed cattle have achieved 100% Choice and 50% Prime. These cattle brought back $200 per head over the market price, and we want you to achieve the same results.

We guarantee bulls will produce calves that grow on the ranch, as well as in the feedyard. The calves produced by our bulls are some of the best the Kansas feedyards have ever seen. The last set of heifers we sent were fed 111 days, gained 5.77 lbs per day, and converted 5.02 on a dry matter basis.

Embracing conservation practices that enhance soil, water, livestock and wildlife has allowed the ranch to evolve and grow with each generation since Enos Blair established it more than a century ago.
